CLUELESS (1995)

Are we still (STILL?) talking about Clueless in 2015? Well, I am, anyway. I know we’re straddling a dangerously thin line between relevance and overexposure here. But it has and probably always will have a special place in my heart as a film that’s survived my childhood, adolescence, and (most impressively) explosive cultural resurgence and what can only be described as Tumblrfication of the past three years or so.
KIDS IN AMERICA
A huge part of its longevity is owed to its wonderful costumes – Mona May fucking killed it here. The colors and textures add such an amazing dimension and LIFE to the film that no other teen film from the nineties (or arguably any teen film since) managed to surpass. A huge part of what distinguishes a film sartorially for me is whether or not there are any iconic looks. I realize that the word “iconic” has probably never meant less than in the buzzword happy world of 2015, but for me, in order for a costume to be truly iconic means it’s not only immediately recognizable, but also evocative of the spirit of the film (think of the wardrobes of Scarlet O’Hara, Holly Golightly or Margot Tenenbaum). And Cher’s wardrobe definitely ranks among those.
Cher's capable driving test outfit is definitely one of my
favorite costumes of all time.
I’ve capped Clueless a couple times now, and each time I’m overwhelmed by the sheer number of costumes. I haven’t gone frame-by-frame or anything (haven’t quite reached that level of obsession… yet) but I’m pretty sure each character has a completely new outfit in each scene they appear in. Including the extras. Think about the logistics for that – just imaging what the prop house looked like is giving me anxiety. SO for the sake of brevity I decided to only feature my favorite costumes from the film. If you’re dying to revisit the full range of clothes in All Their Glory, I’ve covered the film pretty extensively on Tumblr. WORN Fashion Journal also has a compilation video of all of Cher’s outfits that can be watched HERE (although they’re missing a couple – I think the total count for Cher is closer to 60 J).

"A watch doesn't really go with this outfit, Daddy."
"I have direction!" "Yeah, towards the mall."

"Old people can be so sweet!"
Which Clueless character do you think had the best style?
