THE VIRGIN SUICIDES (1999)

As someone who spends a substantially above-average amount of time looking at costumes, it’s always fun to look back on movies made 10-20 years ago and see how the clothes hold up. It’s  surprising how quickly things start to look dated (and I don’t necessarily mean in a “I can’t believe a human thought this clearly hideous outfit looked good enough to photograph” way). Think of Mean Girls or Gossip Girl, both fairly recent examples of costume design that are still fashionable but immediately recognizable as mid-2000s. So it’s remarkable when a film manages to achieve a sense of true timelessness, the way The Virgin Suicides has.

Even more impressive when you consider that The Virgin Suicides is a period piece, set in 1970s Michigan. However, it doesn’t really look overtly 70’s or 90’s. Costume designer Nancy Steiner managed to create a distinct universe, inhabited by the Lisbon girls and their hand-me-down chic wardrobe.

A common criticism of Sofia Coppola’s work is that her films are all about style over substance – but I would argue that to some extent, the style IS the substance in her films. The emotional resonance of The Virgin Suicides comes from the dreamlike atmosphere as much as from the actual events of the story, which unfold more like a series of loosely connected memories than a traditionally structured narrative.

The soft, ethereal colors and fabrics give the Lisbon girls a sense of other-worldliness – most obviously Cecilia’s wedding dress, the only costume we see her in. Her sisters’ clothes bear a striking similarity, particularly as the film progresses and the girls become more and more isolated from reality.

CLUELESS (1995)

Are we still (STILL?) talking about Clueless in 2015? Well, I am, anyway. I know we’re straddling a dangerously thin line between relevance and overexposure here. But it has and probably always will have a special place in my heart as a film that’s survived my childhood, adolescence, and (most impressively) explosive cultural resurgence and what can only be described as Tumblrfication of the past three years or so.
KIDS IN AMERICA
A huge part of its longevity is owed to its wonderful costumes – Mona May fucking killed it here. The colors and textures add such an amazing dimension and LIFE to the film that no other teen film from the nineties (or arguably any teen film since) managed to surpass. A huge part of what distinguishes a film sartorially for me is whether or not there are any iconic looks. I realize that the word “iconic” has probably never meant less than in the buzzword happy world of 2015, but for me, in order for a costume to be truly iconic means it’s not only immediately recognizable, but also evocative of the spirit of the film (think of the wardrobes of Scarlet O’Hara, Holly Golightly or Margot Tenenbaum). And Cher’s wardrobe definitely ranks among those.
Cher's capable driving test outfit is definitely one of my
favorite costumes of all time.
I’ve capped Clueless a couple times now, and each time I’m overwhelmed by the sheer number of costumes. I haven’t gone frame-by-frame or anything (haven’t quite reached that level of obsession… yet) but I’m pretty sure each character has a completely new outfit in each scene they appear in. Including the extras. Think about the logistics for that – just imaging what the prop house looked like is giving me anxiety. SO for the sake of brevity I decided to only feature my favorite costumes from the film. If you’re dying to revisit the full range of clothes in All Their Glory, I’ve covered the film pretty extensively on Tumblr. WORN Fashion Journal also has a compilation video of all of Cher’s outfits that can be watched HERE (although they’re missing a couple – I think the total count for Cher is closer to 60 J).

"A watch doesn't really go with this outfit, Daddy."
"I have direction!" "Yeah, towards the mall."

"Old people can be so sweet!"
Which Clueless character do you think had the best style?

THE JOURNEY BEGINS

Hi there!

SO I suppose I should start this adventure off with a Brief Introduction of sorts. A mission statement? A Declaration of Intent? How gross and adult-y. But I’m an adult now (ish) and I guess we have to start somewhere, so here we are:

I started the eminently distinguished (to me) Film Blog, fashion-and-film.tumblr.com in 2011when I was naught but a wide-eyed ingénue entering my freshman year at real life Film School and, in a mixture of boredom, existential crisis, and my obsessive need to document every movie I ever watched, Fashion&Film was born.

Four years and 277 (yes – TWO HUNDRED AND SEVENTY-SEVEN) films later I’ve come to the conclusion that I need to figure out what the point of it all is. That’s well over 500 hours. Almost 2/3rds of a month’s worth of movie watching. Hence, I’ve decided that I want to attempt to transition it into something a little more substantial.

I'm not quite sure what exactly I'm planning on doing or how I'm planning on doing it. But I'm going to barrel onwards with all the blind confidence befitting a recent college graduate with a hefty internet connection and far too much free time. Hope to see you along the way!
